Do you miss opportunities to grow your business or find a new and exciting job at little or no cost for no good reason? Do you miss opportunities to leverage free or low cost resources?
Have you read Adam Grant’s book Give and Take? His thesis is that the world is made up of Givers, Takers, and Matchers. Givers (like me) garner joy by sharing their gifts with others, Takers get joy receiving as much as possible while giving as little as possible, and Matchers give to get in equal measure.
I hear regularly from people who complain that they don’t have enough clients, can’t find a job, don’t like their job, etc. Can you help me understand why:
- When I offer cost-free networking opportunities to post on LinkedIn sites specific to their target audience, THEY DON’T FOLLOW UP?
- When I offer to share their services with my network, I DON’T HEAR BACK?
- When I offer to coach them in my area of expertise or connect them with others who have resources that would be beneficial, I AM MET WITH SILENCE?
Honestly, I shouldn’t care. Because the easiest thing to do is to move on to someone who recognizes the value of collaboration. But it pains me to witness the lost opportunities that surround us.
I end most communication with “How may I help you?” I do so because the more specific you are about your needs, the easier it is to help you – and I am happy to do so. If you cannot answer that question, then no one can help.
Here’s my suggestion. The next time someone reaches out to you with a suggestion – listen – really listen. Because that person has taken her valuable time to be of help for no reason other than because she cares. Leverage that opportunity.
